In Kansas, children may start kindergarten if they are five years old on or before August 31 of the current school year (unless they previously attended kindergarten in another state). Kindergarten is a full-day program in Topeka. It is considered to be the first year of formal education, although many children attend a preschool program. Kindergarteners are fully integrated into the general school system and all academics are based on state standards and competencies. Teachers maintain licensure and are highly qualified for their grade level and content areas.
