PK-12 Summer Academic/Enrichment Camp

Summer Camps 2024
Course Offerings and Descriptions

The 2024 summer programs are full of fun and interesting learning opportunities! Below is the list of offerings for this summer. In the summer enrichment classes, students sign up by the course. Summer academic and enrichment programs are offered at no cost to Topeka Public Schools students. *Topeka Public Schools reserves the right to make changes to the summer schedule.

Please click on this link to download the permission slip, print it and bring it on the first day of your child's summer program.

Transportation will be provided for ALL Topeka Public Schools students who qualify when they enroll in four of summer programs. Middle and High School students may choose to use the Topeka Metro routes through the Kids Ride Free program using a valid school ID.

Middle School Pathways experiences will be held either at TCALC (drop off and pick up will be in front of Capital City High School, 2731 SW East Circle Drive South). Breakfast and lunch will be provided for all students.

For example, if your student finishes 2nd grade by the time summer programs start, then your child must register for the 2nd grade during summer programs. 

ATTENTION PARENTS OF PRESCHOOL-AGED STUDENTS
All preschool students must have attended preschool during the 2023-2024 school year AND must be fully toilet-trained to attend. There will be no exceptions.

ACT Prep

Grade Level:  9-11

Location: Topeka West High School
Description:  High school students who want to learn and gain more knowledge and awareness around the ACT assessment should enroll for this weekly offering. Get ahead with the advantage of knowing what's on the test and engaging in sample test practice sessions.

Animal Science EXPLORATION

Grade Level:  6, 7, 8

Location:  TCALC
Description:  Explore the amazing world of Animal Science.  During this 2-week session students will have the opportunity to learn about the care and management of animals both big and small.  Topics will include Horses, Cattle, Dogs, Cats, and Chickens!  Field trip to a local farm and hands-on lessons with live animals will be a highlight of the session. This class is part of the Pathway Exploration Program.

Description: Students will read a variety of books by the same author. We will have discussions about the books as well as engage in activities centered around each book or author. These activities will include writing, drawing, and using our imagination.

CHESS

Description: We will be rotating through numerous chess-based activities including chess vocabulary and special rules, chess puzzles, chess crafts, chess theory, Grand Masters, mini chess tournaments and everyone's favorite, chess variants (Bughouse, Horde, Hand & Brain, etc.). We will have a variety of skill levels, from those just learning the rules to 1200 Elo and up, so don't be afraid to sign up if you're interested!

COLLEGE EXPLORATION
FIELD TRIP/ACTIVITY PERMISSION SLIP

Location:  TCALC
Description:  College exploration is the perfect way to kickstart your college search! In this class, you will learn about the college admissions process, scholarships, and financial aid from a former college admissions counselor. You will also get to go on visits to nearby colleges, hear from guest speakers, and talk with college professors and current students. We will host field trips again this year, and will do three visits each week. 

Weeks 1 & 3:  K State, KCKCC, Washburn (subject to change)
Weeks 2 & 4:  KU, JCCC, and ESU (subject to change)

We will leave for all field trips at 8:00 am and return by 11:30 am for lunch.

CONSTRUCTION EXPLORATION

Grade Level:  6, 7, 8

Location:  TCALC
Description:  The students will be involved in the design and building of different pieces of useful and interactive lawn furniture for the grounds of TCALC. These could include benches and tables, planter boxes and artistic pieces. The students will also learn to safely work with a variety of common hand and power tools. This class is part of the Pathway Exploration Program. 

COOPERATIVE LEARNING THROUGH GAMES & SPORTS

Course Description: We will be focusing on teambuilding and cooperative learning through indoor/outdoor games and sports. Students will also participate in our district’s social/emotional curriculum, Second Steps, to develop and work on social skills.

CULINARY & Hospitality EXPLORATION

Grade Level:  6, 7, 8

Location:  TCALC
Description: Students will explore the wonderful world of baking! This course is designed for students of any skill or experience level. We will be covering the basics of measurement, the purposes of five fundamental ingredients through exploring baking science, common mixing and baking techniques. We are a scratch bakery, so everything the students will be using will be items we make from raw ingredients right here in our own kitchen.  

We will start off with simple mixes like drop cookies, and gradually work our way to creating nicely decorated 3 layer cakes. There is a bit of everything in this class for someone looking to learn about kitchen basics and techniques.  This class is part of the Pathway Exploration Program. 

DRAMA / THEATER

Grade Level: 2-8

Location: Scott and Williams 
Description:  Drama/Theater will be offered to students in 2nd grade through 8th grade in two sessions: One group of students in 2nd-8th grade participate on Week 1 & Week 2, and another group of 2nd-8th grade students during Week 3 & Week. This will allow your student to learn theatrical skills as well as prepare them for their final performance at the end of their second week. The two weeks will help students learn their lines and practice for their final performance.

ELEMENTARY ART/Art history

Description:  Join us as we dive into art! Students will explore different mediums as we put our own spin on classic works. We will learn about Van Gogh, Monet, and Andy Warhol and give each student an opportunity to let their creativity flow!

Engineering & Robotics EXPLORATION

Grade Level:  6, 7, 8

Description:  Students will explore simple machines and gear ratios while learning to calculate how much mechanical advantage a machine provides. Students will take a trip to an Ag dealership to look at hydraulic systems and visit Gage Park to find out the mechanical advantage of some playground equipment. Students will also build a VexV5 clawbot and learn to program and drive it. We will have several head-to-head challenges to bring out your competitive spirit. Students will also do some 3D printing. Finally, we will take a look at the Vex Robotics Competition for next year. This class is part of the Pathway Exploration Program. 

ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS (Treehouse Engineering)

Grade Level: 3-5

Description:  In this camp, we will be learning about the engineering design process! This is a project-based learning (PBL) opportunity where students will design and build a 3D version of their dream treehouse. The focus of this PBL is to define a problem reflecting a need, and create a solution by following criteria for success. Students will also apply problem solving skills to account for limitations to design elements that will result in an engineeringly sound final product. Through this process, students will learn to think like an engineer while utilizing practical skills such as teamwork and collaboration. Students will bring their treehouses home at the end of the week!

Description: This camp is a one-week long camp, offered the four weeks of summer programs, In this camp, students experience learning about nature, outdoor sports, and fitness. Every week, we will engage in activities such as compass and orienteering, nature and fishing. 

fundamental woodworking

Grade Level: 6-7-8

Description: The students will develop entry level skills in the safe and accurate use of some of the basic woodworking machines (miter saw, drill press, table saw, jointer, surfacer, sanders and more) while making a couple of small projects.

GEOGRAPHY AND ART

: Africa, We will be focusing on learning about the different animals found in Africa and their habitats through art.  We will, also, have the opportunity to learn about different aspects of African culture.
Week 2: Asia,  We will be focusing on learning about the different animals found in Asia and their habitats through art.  We will, also, have the opportunity to learn about different aspects of Asian culture.
Week 3: Oceania,  We will be focusing on learning about the different animals found in Oceania areas and their habitats through art.  We will, also, have the opportunity to learn about different aspects of Oceania culture.  This would include areas from Hawaii, Australia, etc.

 
Hydroponics & Yarn Art

Description: Explore the exciting technique of growing plants using water-based nutrient solutions instead of soil while incorporating yarn art to the mix!

INTRODUCTION TO YOGA

Description: Students will experience yoga as a physical, mental, and spiritual system for living in harmony with the universe. Students will engage in this holistic method for strengthening not only their body, but also their mind and spirit.

Description: Immerse yourself in foreign languages to explore the different cultures and characteristics of French, German, Spanish, and American Sign Language (ASL). Each week will feature a different language.

Native American Camp

Location: Jardine Middle School
Description: Our Native American Summer Camp is all about engaging in cultural and educational experiences that are linked to Native American heritage! During this week-long camp, students will participate in cooking traditional foods, learning language, and creating projects linked to Indigenous history. The program works to instill pride of culture and heritage in our Native American students.

Newcomer Camp

Grade Level: K-8

Description: This camp is for students new to the country/non-English speakers. Students in this camp will engage in experiences inside and outside of the classroom, through field trips, as a way to use language in authentic settings. Field trips are exciting opportunities to explore the community, and help students practice their English skills. Field trips also open students to new experiences in a new culture.
The Newcomer Program Summer Camp will:

  • Teach Vocabulary that students will need to know to access the information presented during the field trip, Students will practice the vocabulary and give each word context during the field trip.
  • Practice appropriate behavior for the field trip.
  • Include bilingual chaperones.
  • Require permission from parents.
  • Inform families and students of all details/dates/locations.
  • Follow-up with time for students to write about/discuss/share impressions of their experiences.
Outer Space

Grade Level: 2-5

Description:  In this camp, students will get to train like an astronaut, construct their own model rocket, and learn what it's like to live on the International Space Station. Students will also learn all about the Solar System by doing hands-on experiments, art, and games. Please keep in mind that week 2 is a repeat of week 1.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Description:  The photography class will explore the origins of photography and how it has changed over its 195 years. Students will learn the rules of photography, perspective, Rule of Thirds, and exposure. The photography class will discover and be exposed to different photographic styles in a hands-on experience.

Description: Students will dive into the world of books and literature in Project-Based Learning activities to continue sharpening their reading, writing and critical thinking skills, as well as, their creativity! 

SHANER PK SUMMER CAMP

Description: Students will continue to work on Pre-Kindergarten academic skills including counting and letter/sound identification. In addition to academics, students will have various enrichment opportunities that may include robotics and coding, art, gardening and more!

SPANISH

Description: Come join us this summer for beginners/intermediate Spanish classes! We will begin our journey of acquiring Spanish through learning to communicate about yourself, family and friends. SPANISH Reading/Writing for Students In Dual Language

Description: Provide students with academic support to strengthen the area of literacy in a fun and interactive way through art and cooking. The following elements will be covered: phonological awareness, writing, reading, vocabulary, and oral comprehension. This camp is only for students who attended Scott Dual Language Magnet during the 2023-2024 school year.

SUPER SCIENCE

Description: In this camp, we will explore the world of science. Students will participate in lots of hands-on experiments and learn about the scientific method. We will create lava lamps, color explosions, chemical reactions, and much more. Students will learn basic scientific principles, integrating math and reading skills, and have lots of fun in the process!

web & digital EXPLORATION

Location:  TCALC
Description:  Students attending the Summer Web and Digital Pathway will earn a Google Certificate in which they explore digital literacy, healthy digital habits, their digital footprint, and cyber security for their age group. Students will build their own webpage that will show off hands-on infographics, posters, and simple animations.  They will experiment with digital photography, and green screen videography shooting and editing. Required: Students will need to be able to sign into their active TPS 501 school email address. This is a Pathways Exploration Class. 

Writing a magazine

Grade Level: 5-8

Description: In this camp, students will get to learn about creating a magazine. We will conduct interviews, review music, learn about poetry, do movie reviews, have informational articles, and review sports games. Then, they’ll turn all of this information into a magazine by the end of the camp to keep! Please keep in mind that weeks 3 and 4 will be repeats of weeks 1 and 2.
