In November 2019 Chase Middle School hosted its first AVID Showcase event. Educators from around the area attended to learn more about the AVID program and how Chase has found success with AVID implementation for over a decade. AVID Elective students were to stars of this successful event! Way to go Chase! Check out some of the great pictures snapped that day!
The AVID program emphasizes the use of research-based instructional strategies for writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading.
Inquiry strategies help stretch a learner by providing them with opportunities to delve deeper into content, engage in discussions, and learn through a tutorial process.
Students learn teamwork and collective responsibility through a variety of collaborative learning experiences. These strategies can range from the use of Kagan Cooperative Learning to project-based learning to Socratic Seminars.
The AVID program works diligently to provide students with many opportunities to learn organizational and time management skills. Students use binders, focused notes, graphic organizers, and set personalized SMART goals.
Reading is essential for all content areas. AVID strategies help students read the text in a critical manner in order to enhance their reading experiences. Strategies for reading include reciprocal reading, a focus on vocabulary, and marking the text.
AVID provides an engaging text for teachers at AVID sites with a corresponding 'reading to learn' and 'writing to learn' strategies. Text provided in AVID weekly is current and relevant to what students learn at school and in life. AVID staff can access these texts by logging into their MyAVID accounts.
