PK-12 Summer Enrichment Camp

If courses are not available on the enrollment form then they are at capacity and closed.

The 2022 summer enrichment camp is full of fun and interesting learning opportunities! We will be offering the following camp experiences this summer. In the summer enrichment classes, students sign up by the week. Topeka Public Schools students may attend for free, however; students from outside of the district must pay $50 per week to attend.

There is no transportation provided for enrichment camp and classes will be held either at Topeka High School (800 SW 10th, west door) or at TCALC (drop off and pick up will be in front of Capital City High School, 2731 SW East Circle Drive South). Breakfast and lunch will be provided for all students.

There are also a few remote (virtual) enrichment camp sessions that will be offered via Zoom. They are listed below the first column.

ARTS AND CRAFTS

BAKING SEMINAR

Description:  An exploration into the wonderful world of baking science!  Learn how the common ingredients in baked goods work together to make a great treat!!  Come and bake with us and start a passion for one of America's favorite past times!! (Each week will make the same foods, so please note you may want to sign your student up for just one week).

BUILDERS WORKSHOP

Description: Students will rotate through numerous chess-based activities including chess vocabulary and rules, chess puzzles, crafts, and theory.

CODING AND ROBOTICS

Students can sign up for a single week, multiple weeks, or all four weeks as each week will be different.

Grade PK-2
Week 1 - Introduction to Coding, students will learn the fundamentals of coding and will write code to complete tasks.
Week 2 - Beginning Coding, students will continue their coding experiences with different devices.
Week 3 Adding Light and Sound to Robots, students will program the robots to talk, walk, blink, and display lights. We will start to complete obstacle courses.
Week 4 Robots Just Want to Have Fun, students will code the robots to do synchronized routings, obstacles, and other collaborative work. 

Grade 3-5
Week 1 - Introduction to Coding, students will learn the basics of coding and build their own robot. The robot will learn to do tasks, conquest obstacles, and even play games. 
Week 2 - AquaCoding, in this session students will learn to code a variety of devices - with a water theme. Robots will swim, spin, and race their way to victory.
Week 3 - Coding in Space: A New Frontier, in this session students will build Mars and Moon rovers and travel to space as they explore new habitats and conquer new frontiers.
Week 4 -Air, Sea, or Land Missions, in this session students will create a robot that can complete missions to transport items on air, sea, or land.

Grade 6-12
Week 1 - Introduction to Coding
, in this session students will code robots to complete tasks and interact with one another. There will also be an obstacle course  to conquer with prizes for highest points.
Week 2 - Coding a Virtual City, in this session students will create virtual cities by coding in Minecraft and then coding electrical circuits and controllers.
Week 3 - Exploration and Engineering on the Beach, in this session students will build their own robots and code them to automate and interact with water and different materials found on the beach
Week 4 - Coding and 3D Modeling to Infinity and Beyond, in this session students will explore 3D space and build a Moon colony through code. They will explore the effects of gravity and atmosphere on different objects in a digital 3D world.
All grade 6-12 weeks will also have 3D printing and coding Drones as part of each day.

COLLEGE EXPLORATION

Description:  College exploration is the perfect way to kickstart your college search! In this class, you will learn about the college admissions process, scholarships, and financial aid from a former college admissions counselor. You will also get to go on visits to nearby colleges, hear from guest speakers, and talk with college professors and current students. We will host field trips again this year, and will do three visits each week.

Weeks 1 & 3:  K State, KCKCC, Washburn
Weeks 2 & 4:  KU, JCCC, and ESU 

We will leave for all field trips at 8:00 am and return by 11:30 am for lunch.

DRAMA / THEATER

Description:  Theater will be offered to students in grades K-3 for weeks 1 and 2 (part 1 and 2) and for grades 4-8 for weeks 3 and 4 (part 1 and part 2). This will allow your student to learn theatrical skills as well as prepare them for their final performance and the end of the second week. Please plan to enroll your student for part 1 and part 2 (two weeks) so they can engage in two weeks of learning their lines and practicing for the final performance.

ELEMENTARY ART

Description:  Join us as we dive into art! Students will explore different mediums as we put our own spin on classic works. We will learn about Van Gogh, Monet, and Andy Warhol and give each student an opportunity to let their creativity flow!

ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS

Description:  Students will learn about the engineering design process this week! Students will define a design problem reflecting a need and create a solution by following criteria for success, accounting for limitations, and conducting fair tests of their solutions. Students will learn to think like an engineer while learning practical skills for carrying out an experiment.

: Africa, We will be focusing on learning about the different animals found in Africa and their habitats through art.  We will, also, have the opportunity to learn about different aspects of African culture.

Week 3: South America,  We will be focusing on learning about the different animals found in South America and their habitats through art.  We will, also, have the opportunity to learn about different aspects of South American culture.
Week 4: Oceania,  We will be focusing on learning about the different animals found in Oceania areas and their habitats through art.  We will, also, have the opportunity to learn about different aspects of Oceania culture.  This would include areas from Hawaii, Australia, etc.

INTRODUCTION TO YOGA AND DANCE

KIDS COOKING

PHOTOGRAPHY

Description:  The photography class will explore the origins of photography and how it has changed over its 195 years. Students will learn the rules of photography, perspective, Rule of Thirds, and exposure. The photography class will discover and be exposed to different photographic styles in a hands-on experience.

Photography (Secondary)

Grade Level: 6-12

Description: Students will learn shooting basics, camera care, composition, light, camera controls, perspective, focusing, and much more as they take pictures with DSLR (digital single lens reflex) cameras. The 6-12 Week 1 class will also include Adobe Photoshop and explore cool effects for their pictures as they create an online portfolio.

SPACE CAMP

Description: In this camp students will get to train like an astronaut, construct their own model rocket, and learn what it's like to live on the International Space Station. Students will also learn all about the solar system by doing hands-on experiments, art, and games.

 

SPANISH

SUPER SCIENCE

Description:  In this camp we will explore the world of science. Students will participate in lots of hands-on experiments and learn about the scientific method. We will create lava lamps, color explosions, chemical reactions, and much more. Students will learn basic scientific principals and have fun at the same time.

Description:  Students will engage in a literature circle practicing different roles such as Discussion Director, Literary Luminary, Vocabulary Enricher, Summarizer, Illustrator, and Connector. A literature circle allows for kids to take charge of their reading and challenges them to dig deeper into the specific text they are reading. Literature circles are essentially book discussions where each child takes on a different role allowing them to add meaningful and purposeful thoughts to the discussion. The chosen text for the summer is The Lemonade War.
