Criteria for Mentor Selection

All teachers must have:

  • a minimum of three consecutive years of successful experience in the area in which he/she will be mentoring;
  • current knowledge of teaching styles and philosophies;
  • school specialist mentoring can be cross-district if necessary;
  • demonstrate exemplary teacher ability as measured by the district observations, pre- and post-conferences;
  • exhibits qualities of an effective mentor, e.g. understanding of content standards, ability to transmit effective and current teaching strategies, understanding of diverse learning styles (differentiated instruction), ability to listen;
  • may provide assistance and guidance to no more than two teachers;
  • ability to serve as a positive role model for the educator by providing opportunities for continual feedback and reflection;
  • willingness to commit the extra time and effort needed;
  • participate voluntarily.
